Dentures
North Syracuse, NY

Rendering of removable partial denture at Mahar Dental in North Syracuse, NYWhen you lose your teeth, your whole life is affected. One of the most obvious effects of tooth loss is the impact on your smile. Things you once did with little thought, such as eating and speaking, suddenly become major challenges. The inability to chew properly interferes with your digestive process, leading to malnutrition. Your jawbone begins to weaken and change shape. Significant tooth loss even affects the appearance of your face, causing you to look years older than your real age. When faced with tooth loss, it is important to have them replaced as soon as possible. Mahar Dental can replace missing teeth with dentures.

What Causes Tooth Loss?

There are a few different issues that can lead to tooth loss.
•  Gum disease. Gum disease is the most common cause of tooth loss. When gum disease advances, your gum tissue pulls away from the surfaces of your teeth. This allows bacteria to fall below the gumline, where they begin attacking your jawbone and periodontal ligaments. These supporting structures grow weak, and your teeth become loose and fall out.
•  Facial trauma. Trauma can be the result of some different situations, including car accidents, falls, sports injuries, and more.
•  Severe tooth decay.
•  Bruxism, or the grinding and clenching of your teeth.

Replacing Teeth With Dentures

Dentures have been the go-to treatment for tooth loss for hundreds of years. Over the years, they have undergone numerous developments, which have helped to make dentures look much more natural and feel less bulky. The basic design is still similar. Dentures are a removable prosthesis, typically designed to replace an entire arch of missing teeth, that are made from impressions of your mouth. The dentures we use today consist of an acrylic base that can be colored to match the color of your gum tissue. It is made to rest directly on your gums, which then provide the support for your new teeth. The base holds your replacement teeth, which are made from acrylic resin. This material can be designed to look just like real teeth. This enables your dentures to look more natural and much less obvious.

What about Partial Dentures?

If you are missing several teeth in your jaw, but still have healthy teeth remaining, there is no need to extract your healthy teeth. Instead, we can provide you with partial dentures. Partial dentures are designed to replace sections of missing teeth while allowing your healthy teeth to remain where there are. Much like other dentures, partial dentures are made from impressions of your mouth and are custom created to fit perfectly in your mouth. The base, which sits directly on your gums, holds your replacement teeth. In addition to your gums providing support for your partial denture, this restoration also has metal clasps that attach to your healthy teeth.
