How Does Oral Health Affect General Wellness

Posted on 6/20/2022 by Thomas Mahar
How Does Oral Health Affect General WellnessThe main cause of poor oral health is failure to observe proper hygiene and consumption of food that promotes or supports the growth of harmful bacteria that causes diseases such as tooth decay, gingivitis, and periodontitis, which, if not treated, can eventually lead to teeth loss. If one has these oral diseases, one may have difficulties chewing food, lowering the intake of food, which may lead to malnutrition since the body is not getting enough nutrients. This leads to poor health.

High sugar consumption leads to poor oral health since it creates good conditions that support the growth of the harmful bacteria found in the plaque. The bacteria eat up the enamel leading to tooth decay, causing cavities and sensitivities of the teeth; the bacteria may cause also cause infection of the gum. The abuse of tobacco and alcoholic beverages can also be a great risk to oral health.

Living in a fluoridated area is a huge benefit to teeth, especially for people prone to or at high risk of tooth decay. Fluoride protects the enamel, preventing the teeth from cavities or dental caries. The plaque that results from not brushing teeth regularly eats up the enamel layer and leads to high risks of infection that harm the nerves hence the high need for fluoride in water.

Ways to Improve Oral Health

One can improve one's oral health by regularly and properly brushing their teeth with a recommended toothbrush, preferential an electric one, and using fluoride toothpaste. Visiting the dentist more often can help people since the diseases are easily treated when detected early.
