What You Need to Know Before Getting a Tooth Extraction

Posted on 4/26/2021 by Thomas Mahar
What You Need to Know Before Getting a Tooth ExtractionTooth extraction sounds like a scary procedure, which makes many patients nervous. However, the fact is that tooth extraction is a simple and quick procedure that is performed by dentists and oral surgeons on a daily basis.

Why Do You Need a Tooth Extraction?

There are a few reasons that may qualify you for tooth extraction. People with diseased teeth that pose a risk to their health and can't be fixed by a filling or crown have to undergo the process of tooth extraction.

In some instances, tooth extractions are done on teeth that have been damaged in an accident and cannot be saved. These teeth need to be extracted because they risk your entire dental structure.

What to Expect During a Tooth Extraction?

The tooth extraction process starts with a local anesthetic. So, make sure to ask your dentist whether you can eat much beforehand or not. Most single tooth extractions aren't very invasive, which is why they are done with local anesthetics. The point of giving anesthetics is to ensure that you don't experience any discomfort during the procedure.

The tooth extraction procedure will be more complex if you are getting your wisdom teeth removed. In most cases, you will require a stronger form of medication. Most dentists also suggest that you must not eat anything for 12 hours prior to the procedure to keep the food from interfering with the anesthesia. Remember to take deep breaths and keep yourself relaxed before your wisdom tooth extraction as it typically takes longer.
