Reasons to Avoid Rinsing with Water After Brushing

Reasons to Avoid Rinsing with Water After Brushing Many people rinse away the protective film that toothpaste leaves behind when they rinse after brushing. You don't want to do this, as you really defeat the purpose of brushing at all. That is why we recommend that patients spit out excess toothpaste and leave the toothpaste that is normally rinsed away on the surface of their teeth. The following information gives you more details along these lines.

Reasons Why It Is Not Good to Use Water after Brushing

If you want to rinse your teeth, it is better to do so after you floss. Rinsing removes any dislodge particles and cleans the teeth of plaque. Floss your teeth before you brush with a soft bristle toothbrush. Do not use a brush that is firmer. Otherwise, you can erode the enamel. When brushing, make sure you cover the outer and inner teeth and the chewing surfaces. Next, you want to make sure you scrape or brush the tongue, getting rid of any excess bacteria. The fluoride in the toothpaste will provide a protective coating over the teeth – one that should not be washed away. Spit out the toothpaste, so your teeth receive extra cavity protection. This is an especially good practice to form at night, as your teeth will remain protected while you sleep.

Why Leaving Toothpaste on Your Teeth Helps

By leaving toothpaste with fluoride on your teeth, you are strengthening the enamel and preventing future problems with tooth decay. Adding fluoride protection also reduces the amount of acid, caused by bacteria, in the mouth. That is why brushing your teeth with an ADA-approved fluoride toothpaste can go a long way in preserving your smile. Would you like to set an appointment for a cleaning and fluoride treatment? If so, we can schedule you for an exam and cleaning anytime you want. If you have not visited our office in the last six months, now is a good time to set an appointment for an exam.
