What to Do When a Cavity Begins to Hurt

Posted on 6/10/2017 by Thomas Mahar
A woman suffering from a painful tooth cavity.
Cavities don't simply show up while you were asleep one night. They take time to develop. If you wake up one day and have a toothache from a cavity, it's been developing for at least a bit of time.

Cavities are not good to have in your mouth, so as soon as you suspect you have one, you need to go in and see your dentist. They can often fill the cavity before it gets to the point of being painful.

Easing Cavity Pain While Waiting for Your Appointment

Sometimes it may be a day or two before you can go in and see your dentist. If you have a toothache, that can be difficult. To help reduce your pain, keep yourself on a steady schedule of over-the-counter pain relievers. This should take the edge off until you can get seen.

To help reduce breakthrough pain, eat foods that are as close to your body temperature as possible. Eating foods that are extremely hot or extremely cold can increase your pain, and should be avoided. Also, avoid foods that are acidic or super sugary, as they can cause your pain to spike up again.

By going to your dentist every six months, you can avoid cavities getting to the point of being miserably painful more often than not. If you wake up with pain one day, and think that a cavity is the reason why, then contact our office office.

We can take a peek at what's going on, and help you figure out the cause of your pain. If we discover a cavity, we can fill it and your pain will be gone. However, if it is due to something else, we will be able to show you what's going on while you are here!
