The Health Ailments Bad Oral Health Can Cause

Most people are aware of some of the outcomes that can result when they do not regularly practice good oral hygiene. Cavities, stained teeth, and gum disease leading to sore and bleeding gums, bone loss from the jaw bone, and even tooth loss are all predictable outcomes.

But did you know that what you do in your mouth can actually affect the health of your entire body?

Cardiovascular Issues

When you don't properly and regularly clean your teeth and gums, you will begin to develop a buildup of harmful bacteria in your mouth, especially in between your teeth and below your gum line. These bacteria can then enter the blood stream and cause other problems elsewhere in the body.

One issue the bacteria can cause is a hardening of the arteries known as atherosclerosis. This in turn can lead to a buildup of plaque within the arteries, decreasing the flow of blood throughout your body and increasing your chances of having a stroke or a heart attack.

Respiratory Issues

If you have a mouth that is teeming with bacteria, some of those bacteria are pulled into your lungs every time you draw a breath. This in turn can lead to lung infections such as pneumonia. So, if you want to breathe easy, make sure to keep your teeth and gums clean!

Diabetes Issues

If you have diabetes, you already have a fight on your hands, keeping your blood sugar in check. Gum disease-a direct result of poor oral hygiene-makes it even harder to manage blood sugar levels.
