A young boy with a fractured tooth! Many children like to chew on hard food and candy and this may cause breaks in their teeth. A fractured tooth can result in a deadly ache, which should not be ignored.

Kids who suffer from a broken tooth can experience lots of discomfort and pain. This dental problem may lead to an abscess or cracked tooth syndrome and it can result in your child missing school. You do not want your young one to miss out on his or her education because of a dental matter.

What is a Fractured Tooth?

A tooth fracture results from a break or crack in the hard shell of a tooth. The outer layer of the tooth is called the enamel. It protects the soft tissue inside of the tooth, which contains blood vessels and nerves. Depending on where the break occurs, it may cause your child extreme pain. Cracked tooth syndrome occurs when there are small fractures in the dentition. Hence, these breaks cannot be picked up by an x-ray because the fractures are underneath the gum line, which makes it difficult for us to see. If your adolescent has one cracked tooth, he or she is more likely to develop another one. Cracked tooth syndrome is frequently associated with the lower molars due to forceful chewing and biting.

Signs and Symptoms of Cracked Tooth Syndrome

Sometimes a cracked tooth may or may not cause your kid any pain. It all depends on where the break occurs on the tooth. Signs and symptoms of this dental injury include pain in a tooth when biting or chewing, temperature sensitivity to heat or cold, and loose dentition. A cracked tooth may be difficult for us to diagnose because the signs and symptoms are not consistent.

Why is a Fractured Tooth Dangerous for Kids?

A tooth fracture can be very dangerous to your kids because it can cause them extreme discomfort and pain. In addition, an abscess or bacterial infection may develop inside of the tooth. Your child can even experience tooth loss. The bacterial infection can become so bad that the nerves in a tooth can perish no matter what treatment options are undertaken. The only alternative left is to extract or remove the infected tooth.

Moreover, a cracked tooth hurts because biting or chewing food cause these broken pieces to move around and the soft inner tissue of the tooth can become irritated. The pulp of a tooth is the soft tissue inside of it, which contains blood vessels and nerves. The pulp may get so damaged that this soft tissue can no longer repair itself. This can make your kid's tooth hurt and he or she may feel sensitivity to hot or cold temperatures. An abscess is an extreme infection of the pulp, which can spread to the bone surrounding the tooth. Your adolescent can become hospitalized because of an untreated tooth infection. Parents you do want your children to lose their teeth too early because it can affect how they talk, chew food, and think about their self-image. Inappropriate eating habits can negatively impact your kid's growth and development. Do not take any chances because a fractured tooth can be detrimental to the overall health and wellbeing of your children.
