Why You Need to Protect Your Gums When Pregnant

This is an exciting time filled with many changes, and it's important to take care of yourself and your growing baby. One aspect of your health that's often overlooked during pregnancy is your oral health. While you may be focusing on prenatal vitamins and healthy eating, don't forget about your gums!

The Importance of Oral Care During Pregnancy

During pregnancy, hormonal changes can make your gums more sensitive and prone to inflammation. This can lead to a condition called gingivitis, which is characterized by red, swollen, and bleeding gums. While gingivitis is usually not serious, if left untreated, it can progress to periodontitis, a more severe gum infection that can damage the bones and tissues supporting your teeth.

The Link Between Gum Disease and Pregnancy Complications

Several studies have shown a link between gum disease and pregnancy complications, including:
•  Preterm birth (birth before 37 weeks)
•  Low birth weight
•  Preeclampsia (high blood pressure during pregnancy)

While the exact reasons for this link are still being studied, it's believed that inflammation from gum disease may release chemicals into the bloodstream that can affect the pregnancy.

How to Protect Your Gums During Pregnancy

The good news is that you can take steps to protect your gums and reduce your risk of pregnancy complications. Here are some tips:
•  Brush your teeth twice a day with a soft-bristled toothbrush. Be sure to brush gently along the gum line.
•  Floss daily. Flossing removes plaque and bacteria from between your teeth, where your toothbrush can't reach.
•  Use an antiseptic mouthwash. This can help kill bacteria and reduce inflammation.
•  Schedule regular dental checkups. Your dentist can check for signs of gum disease and provide professional cleanings to remove plaque and tartar buildup.
•  Tell your dentist you are pregnant. This will help them tailor your treatment plan to your needs.

Additional Tips for Maintaining Oral Health During Pregnancy

In addition to the tips above, here are some other things you can do to maintain good oral health during pregnancy:
•  Eat a healthy diet. This will help keep your gums healthy and strong.
•  Avoid sugary drinks and snacks. These can contribute to tooth decay.
•  Drink plenty of water. This will help keep your mouth hydrated and wash away food particles.
•  Don't smoke. Smoking increases your risk of gum disease and other health problems.

Taking care of your oral health during pregnancy is important for both you and your baby. By following these tips, you can protect your gums, reduce your risk of pregnancy complications, and ensure a healthy smile for years to come.
