Four Tips for Keeping Your Mouth Healthy during Cold and Flu Season

Posted on 10/15/2024 by Thomas Mahar
A selection of toothpasteCold and flu season is upon us, and with it comes a greater risk of catching a nasty bug. But did you know that taking care of your oral health can actually help boost your immune system and fight off infection? It's true! A healthy mouth is a key component of overall wellness, and during cold and flu season, it's more important than ever to keep your teeth and gums in top shape.

Here are four simple tips you can follow to keep your mouth healthy and strong during the cold and flu season:

Brush Your Teeth Twice a Day (and After Meals!)
This may seem like a no-brainer, but it's important to brush your teeth twice a day for two minutes each time, especially during cold and flu season. Brushing helps remove plaque and bacteria that can build up on your teeth and gums, leading to cavities and gum disease. These conditions can weaken your immune system and make you more susceptible to illness.

Brushing after meals is also essential, especially if you've been indulging in sugary or acidic foods and drinks. These substances can create an environment in your mouth that is conducive to bacterial growth. By brushing after meals, you can help neutralize the acids and remove food particles before they have a chance to do damage.

Don't Forget to Floss!
Flossing once a day is just as important as brushing. Flossing removes plaque and bacteria from between your teeth, where your toothbrush can't reach. This helps prevent cavities and gum disease, both of which can weaken your immune system.

If you find flossing difficult or time-consuming, there are other options available, such as interdental brushes or water flossers. Talk to your dentist about which option is best for you.

Use a Mouthwash
An antimicrobial mouthwash can help kill germs that can cause colds, flu, and other infections. Look for a mouthwash that contains cetylpyridinium chloride (CPC) or chlorhexidine gluconate (CHX). These ingredients have been shown to be effective in reducing plaque and gingivitis, and may also help prevent colds and flu.

Stay Hydrated
Drinking plenty of water is important for overall health, and it's especially important during cold and flu season. Water helps keep your mouth moist, which can help prevent the growth of bacteria. It also helps flush out toxins and keep your immune system functioning properly.
