Sleep Apnea

Couple suffering from sleep apnea in North Syracuse
Have you ever had anyone tell you that it sounded like you were stopping breathing during the night, then gasping for air to catch your breath? This could be sleep apnea rearing its head. This is an ailment where one struggles to maintain their breath during the night. There are a few different causes of sleep apnea, plus many symptoms that can appear if you suffer from this ailment. Here is an overview so you can decide if you should be checked out for sleep apnea.

Symptoms of Sleep Apnea

The most common symptom of sleep apnea is a lack of breathing during sleep, often for anywhere from a few seconds, up to a minute, sometimes longer. This can happen to a person of any age, from children up through senior citizens, and happens to both men and women. However, if you are a male that is at least 40 years old and you happen to be overweight, you are slightly more at risk than others.

If you often wake tired, with a headache, feeling as though you have not slept for days, you could be suffering from sleep apnea, and you may want to get into a sleep clinic to get diagnosed.

Untreated sleep apnea can lead to a wide variety of health issues. You could wind up with blood pressure that goes up far too high, issues with the health of your heart, headaches and exhaustion, memory issues, and the list goes on from there. When you have sleep apnea, something needs to be done about it to get it under control, because the longer it goes on, the worse those symptoms typically become.

Getting Sleep Apnea Treatment

The first thing you must do to get treated for sleep apnea is to get diagnosed and see if you are truly suffering from this, or if it happens to be another ailment that is causing your issues. If you are diagnosed with sleep apnea, you are going to need to get some type of treatment. For those with a mild diagnosis of sleep apnea, the treatment may involve losing weight, sleeping in different positions, or quitting smoking. However, as the severity increases, so does the level of treatment.
