Mouth Trauma Mahar Dental NY 13212-4103Accidents happen all the time. Some of these accidents result in broken bones, scrapes, and bruises. Others can result in damage to your mouth, including having teeth knocked out. Trauma to the mouth can also damage your gums, teeth, and jaw.

When you've had any sort of injury to your face that could have affected your mouth, even if you don't notice any damage right away, it's always best to call us and schedule a check-up. There could be some hidden damage.

What Causes Mouth Trauma?

There are many different types of injuries that can damage your teeth, tongue, cheeks, and other parts of the mouth. Getting hit in the face, being in a car accident, and falling are all fairly common causes of mouth trauma. You can even have major mouth trauma by biting down on something really hard.

Any sort of damage to your mouth warrants a call to us. Other types of injuries are easier to see and self-diagnose. You can look at a scratch or scrape on your arm and get an idea of how bad it is. You can't really do the same with your mouth.

Even using a flashlight and a mirror won't give you a clear picture of what's going on. You need an expert to diagnose mouth trauma, so call and make an appointment as soon as you can. It's always better to be safe than sorry.

What to Do After the Trauma Occurs

What should you do when mouth trauma occurs? The first thing to do is to deal with any bleeding you may have. If you've had several teeth knocked out, it may be very difficult to stop.

You may need to go to the ER to have stitches. If you believe your jaw or other bones in your face have been broken, you certainly need medical assistance right away.

Always call us as soon as you can to discuss your dental emergency. Mouth trauma is serious, and if we don't deal with the damage quickly, you may lose teeth.
